The STORY explores communities of human actors at a time of disintegrating world order through a sci-fi lens. Five bodies move between gravitation, algorithm and identity as human experiences are inextricably intertwined with nonhuman systems of technology and artificial intelligence.
As part of the evening before the performance, there will be a short but insightful session in which personalities of Slovak and Czech science fiction and the choreographer of the performance THE STORY Yuri Korec will focus on the most current perspectives of Slovak dystopias and utopias, not only in the context of the literary genre. Invited guests include editor, cultural anthropologist and political scientist Magdalena Dušková, Slovak science fiction writer and publicist Michal Hvorecký and Yuri Korec. A mini exhibition/video installation is being prepared as part of the event.
Inspired by sci-fi aesthetics, choreographer Juraj Korec creates a playing field shaped by the events of a disintegrating world order and quandaries concerning the use of AI. At the edges of this horizon, five enigmatic identities - singularities - leave the familiar behind and surrender to the call of gravitation in a relentless algorithm. Their stories appear as fleeting traces that seem important but are interchangeable with many others: the microstories that inscribe themselves on our bodies daily, that remain and yet are somehow always lost, like the impressions left by bodies in the dust of lunar eternity. Where can one go, if one can only go backward?.
An internationally co-produced dance project, The STORY reflects on approaches to embodied storytelling through radical strategies that position the viewer as a voyeur observing corporeal identities. The gazes of the performers and the spectators never meet. In moments of birth and repeated extinction, the motives behind embodied identities’ actions loom. The project is part of Juraj Korec’s broader, long-term interest in the performativity of the body in contemporary dance and visual media and builds on the interdisciplinary research project Exhibit the Body.
