A community of humans and the sea emerges on the border between terra firma and the underwater world. Here, water is not just a backdrop, but a living, equal partner. It absorbs emotions, memories and fears and returns them, transformed. Lingering at the edge, immersion and return allow for the experience of coexistence with more than human strength as a possible source of soothing, resilience and rediscovered equilibrium.

“Could we have a complete picture of depth without first meditating at the edge of deep water?” (Gaston Bachelard, Water and Dreams)

Carolina Arandia (choreografka) Sabina Bočková (tanečnice/performerka) seanaut Valtteri Alanen

„I like to be alone, in silence, with the sea. Or accompanied, but in silence. Even when I am accompanied, I seek a moment of solitude with the sea. I walk away. I feel that my emotions settle in the sea, or in the sea’s company. The emotions calm down, they find themselves with all that immensity and density, that voracity. There is space for them. I give them space before the horizon of the sea. On the rocks, I inhabit that edge from which I was always kept out of fear. On any rock, by any sea, I find that place I always like to return to, where suspended memories are revived.

I remember dropping the scoop net, the mediomundo – an object that fascinated me – into the sea. It had to fall straight, evenly, without getting tangled up. I would drop it in, then get distracted. I found it fascinating to see the water coming out of the holes in the mediomundo and know that somehow I was connecting with what was happening down there, with what cannot be seen. A part of the sea was mine for a few seconds.

For me, diving into the sea is a way to resurface, salir a flote.* It lightens me, shakes me, restores my vitality, my wild spirit. I like to swim at night, jumping from the rocks into the depths and swimming back to shore. I always like to go right to the last rock, to the very edge, as far out as I can.

I always take my time before entering the sea. I observe it for a good few hours. I spend time on the shore, watching its waves, its currents, its eddies.”

*salir a flote is a Spanish expression that means to recover from a crisis or difficult situation and move forward despite adversity. It often implies resilience and finding a way to rise above problems.

The international project The Nature of Us is a collaboration between four central European cultural organisations (Workshop Foundation, Hungary; Bazaar Festival, Czech Republic; fondacja polka dot, Poland; and PlaST, Slovakia). Bringing the arts and sciences together, it aims to respond to the situation of our landscape and strengthen cross-border collaboration in a socio-cultural context. The project creates space for interdisciplinary collaborations between artists and scientists through residencies, laboratory-style encounters, festivals, symposia and educational programs. Its primary goal is to develop new tools and methods that enable artists and cultural organisations to create works with greater social and educational impact while also disseminating scientific findings to the wider public in an appealing format.
